One of the most infamous vampires in history, Angel is renowned for both for his legendary villainy as well as for his legendary heroism. As the Vampire With A Soul, he fights on the side of good and as the ally and lover of Buffy Summers, the even more legendary Vampire Slayer and has helped saved the world on numerous occasions as a Champion of Humanity. With his demonic vampiric side in ascendancy, he is known as Angelus and is responsible for terrorizing and torturing countless victims with his utter sadism, sheer brutality, and raw evilness that he has very nearly brought the world to the brink of destruction.
Angel first appeared on March 10, 1997 on the television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiere episode, "Welcome to the Hellmouth". He was portrayed by David Boreanaz who would go on to reprise his character throughout the rest of the series and was so popular that he starred in his own spin-off series, Angel as the titular character.
The Vampire With a Soul was born and named Liam in Galway, Ireland in 1727 to an extremely wealthy merchant family. At the tender age of 18, he fell in love and wooed a beautiful aristocrat, Sarah Gilfried only for their relationship to end badly. Bitterly disillusioned by women afterwards, Liam found comfort in drink and the affordable affections of prostitutes, forsaking the simpering romantic notion of love.
In 1753, at the age of 26; Liam had become notorious as drunken, whoring, layabout in his hometown and a bitter disappointment to his father. It was shortly afterwards that Liam was lured into an alley by a young whore for what he thought would be for a quick bit of drunken debauchery.
That whore turned out to the vampire Darla who had been taken by his roguish looks and charm and after feeding on him, decided to sire him. He rose a day later and approached his old family home. His grief stricken little sister was delighted at his reappearance, proclaiming that he was an angel and immediately invited him within, ignorant of his transformed nature. She was merely his first victim and he would proceed to slaughter and feed on the rest of his family, before taunting and killing his father. Afterwards, he would mockingly assume the namesake of "Angelus" and he would become described historically for being 'a demon with an angel's face' or 'the one with an angel's face'.
Alongside his sire and his new lover, he and Darla would proceed to cut a bloody swath throughout Ireland before in 1760, when they traveled to England. There, Darla reunited with the Master and presented her new lover and child to him. Angelus was not impressed and was brutally beaten by the Master for his disrespect. Afterwards, Angelus convinced Darla to break away from the Master and his stifling Order and have enjoy their new undead lives. Taken with her lover, Darla would abandon the Master and the Order of Aurelius and leave for a time.
Angelus quickly became known as one of the most evil Vampires alive and would subsequently sire Drusilla who would in turn sire Spike. The quartet would become known as "The Whirlwind" and the Scourge of Europe. However, his burgeoning career of villainy came to an abrupt end in 1898 when he inadvertently regained his soul through a gypsy curse. With his soul came his human conscience and with his restored conscience, Angelus grew sickened by his murderous rampage and fled from the "Whirlwind", ashamed of his acts of depravity. Without his unifying presence, the remnants of the "Whirlwind" would soon break apart and he would assume his new namesake of Angel.
Over the next few decades, Angel would find himself in a cycle of self-loathing and attempts of penance, seeking to do good but often failing thanks to his vampiric nature and bloodlust. In the late 1970s, Angel fell into despair and went into self-exile, becoming a homeless vagrant who managed to survive on rats for the next twenty years. It was in this horrific state that he was found by the Balance Demon Whistler who persuaded him to once again try for redemption, showing him that he was not alone in his struggle against evil and others also fought against their natures. His example was the newly chosen Vampire Slayer, Buffy Summers who had originally refused to serve in her role as a slayer but was struggling to accept it and was undergoing training with Watcher Merrick Jamison-Smythe.
For the first time in two decades, Angel was captivated and fell desperately in love with Buffy and was filled with new resolve and purpose: to help her. Shortly afterwards, she moved to Sunnydale to begin the next phase of her war and he followed, watching her from the shadows. However that was not enough for Angel and he couldn't help but intervene, becoming a strange but reliable associate to Buffy who was attracted to the dark and romantic figure he appeared to be. The revelation that Angel was a Vampire however did not endear him to most of Buffy's friends and new Watcher Rupert Giles, particularly when his past history as Angelus came to light.
He is currently fighting for good and is widely known as the Vampire with a Soul.
Personality and Traits
- "When you become a vampire, the demon takes your body, but it doesn't get your soul; that's gone. No conscience, no remorse, it's an easy way to live. You have no idea what it's like to have done the things I've done...and care. I haven't fed on a human being since that day." ―Angel; Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Angel"
- "A vampire in love with a Slayer. It's rather poetic... in a maudlin sort of way." ―Rupert Giles to Angel; Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind"

- "You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love 'til it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other 'til it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. Love isn't brains, children, it's blood―blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." ―Spike about Angel and Buffy Summers' love; Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Lovers Walk"
