A hyper-sentient tree-like alien who befriended Rocket Raccoon, becoming the bounty hunter/intergalactic criminal's houseplant/muscle. Despite a large criminal record spanning galaxies, Groot ultimately fell into the ranks of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Background[]

Groot is a minor superhero based on the comic book character published by Marvel Comics. He debuted in Tales to Astonish #13, published on November of 1960. He was created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Dick Ayers. Groot was originally portrayed as an extraterrestrial invader seeking to conquer the Earth only to be defeated by a clever human who unleashed termites upon him, killing him and ending his threat forever.

Groot was reintroduced in 2006 in a misunderstood and more heroic incarnation in the "Annihilation" crossover miniseries focusing on Marvel's more obscure space faring characters. Groot's reintroduction would catapult the once obscure character to new heights of popularity and become a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Along with the group, he would guest star in a variety of animated cartoon TV series aside from becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his catchphrase of "I am Groot" becoming a popular Internet meme.
