Trivia[]

  • The original title for the book that this movie is based on is "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and was the film was titled as such in the United Kingdom. But when Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights in 1997, they decided that children would not be interested in a book with the word 'Philosopher' in the title and so renamed it to "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and had the manuscript suitably altered to fit the changes. J.K. Rowling regrets the change was made but was not in a strong enough position at the time to fight it. Nevertheless, the alterations were such that when it came to filming the live action adaptation, the filmmakers were afraid that the US fans would not recognize the title. Thus, it forced them to change the dialogue in the international and domestic versions; for the United States, they use the word "Sorcerer's Stone" while in the international version, they refer it to as the "Philosopher's Stone" as well as releasing it by the title domestically as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" internationally.
