Ser Jorah Mormont was once a knight of the realm in Westeros and for a time, Lord of Bear Island. Falling on hard times, he exiled himself to the far off lands across the Narrow Sea to avoid execution for his crimes.
Jorah is the exiled Lord of House Mormont, a vassal house of House Stark whose territory is Bear Island. His father, Jeor Mormont, is the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. In financial trouble due to an 'expensive' wife, Jorah sold captured poachers into slavery - a serious offence under the law of the Seven Kingdoms. He chose to flee Westeros rather than face Lord Eddard Stark's justice.
Jorah enters the service of Viserys Targaryen at his sister Daenerys's wedding celebration, and proves himself useful to the exiled prince as a translator. Over time, his loyalty shifts to Daenerys rather than to her brother, to the extent that he physically stops Viserys from stealing her dragon eggs. Jorah is secretly an informant for Varys and is the one who warns King Robert and his council of Daenerys' pregnancy, after which he is awarded a pardon for his good service to the throne. When he recognises an assassin trying to pass Daenerys poisoned wine, however, he steps in to save her life.
