Reception[]

The Pacifier was released on March 4, 2005 in the United States, premiering alongside Be Cool and The Jacket. It debuted in 3,131 theaters nationwide and earned a total gross of $30,552,694 for its opening weekend which enabled it to jump to the number 1 spot for that weekend. It was supplanted by the debut of Robots by the next weekend, dropping to the number 2 spot. It continued its steady decline over the next few weeks, toppling out of the Top 10 ranking by its eighth weekend and then out of the Top 20 by its thirteenth weekend. It ended after its 19-week box office run in the low 30 most popular films.

Overall, it earned a total of $113,086,868 domestically in the United States and an additional $85,550,000 in the foreign markets for a worldwide total of $198,636,868; more than doubling its original production budget.

Despite performing well in the box office, The Pacifier did not receive similar treatment by the critics who dismissed it as "only moderately amusing" with noted film critic Roger Ebert claiming that "the premise is promising, but somehow the movie never really takes off". The Rotten Tomatoes website gave it a low 20% "Rotten" approval rating with Metacritic scored it "30 out of 100".

Trivia[]

  • Originally, Jackie Chan was intended to be the primary star of this film but had to bow out later on resulting in Vin Diesel being cast.
  • The Plummers were named in honor of actor Christopher Plummer whose most well known for his role in The Sound of Music as Captain Georg Von Trapp.
