Overview[]

Poe Dameron is the most daring and courageous starfighter pilot and operative in the Resistance. He flies in a personalized black T-70 X-wing under the callsign of "Black Leader" and commands the Red and Blue X-Wing Squadrons. His astromech droid is BB-8.

A major supporting character in the 2015 film Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Poe Dameron is portrayed by Oscar Isaac.

Background[]

Poe Dameron is the son of two long standing members of the Rebel Alliance who bravely fought against the Empire in the Galactic Civil War. His father was Sergeant Kes Dameron who served alongside General Han Solo on the commando mission to destroy the shield generator on Endor that was protecting the Death Star II and his mother was Lieutenant Shara Bey, a noted starfighter pilot and served alongside Luke Skywalker on a number of missions.

Poe was born roughly two years before the Battle of Endor and was raised by his grandparents as he grew up, hearing stories of his family's brave fight to restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy. He quickly joined the New Republic and rose to the rank of Commander and leading his own squadron of T-85 X-wings.

However, Poe became increasingly disenchanted with the Republic as they were content to ignore what he saw as a major threat from the remnants of the shattered Empire which was reorganizing itself under the banner of the First Order. Unable to forget the sacrifices of so many brave men and women who fought, bled, and died for their freedom from the Empire; Poe was among those who resigned to attach themselves to Princess Leia Organa's new Resistance movement. There, he just as quickly rose as their most daring and talented pilots and was often hand-picked by Leia Organa as her most trusted operative.

Trivia[]

  • In the original draft of J.J. Abrams' script for Star Wars Episode VII, Poe Dameron was meant to die early in the movie and inspire Finn to join the Resistance. However after talking to Oscar Isaac about accepting the role, Abrams realized that the actor who was originally enthusiastic about his role became increasingly hesitant when he learned his role was intended to be a very brief cameo. Isaac eventually decided to accept the role and his impending "death" only to learn that Abrams had gone back to the drawing board and decided to expand Dameron's role and would go on to guest star in the rest of the movie. Further, Abrams has confirmed that Dameron is set to return in the sequel Star Wars Episode VIII movie as well.
  • Ironically, actor Oscar Isaac was born in the country of Guatemala which is the shooting location of Tik'al that was used as Yavin 4, the planet of the secret rebel base in the 1977 film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. After Isaac realized it and jokingly pointed out the coincidence and his birth ties to the Star Wars films, it was decided to make Yavin 4 as Poe Dameron's homeworld.
  • J.J. Abrams named the character of Poe after his production assistant, Morgan Dameron.
