Overview[]

Listen up you shaved monkeys! This is Rocket and I used to be ordinary. Then a bunch of alien a-holes took me apart, tinkering with me in order to "improve" me.

It worked. They made me smarter and stronger, but it wasn't enough. They did it over and over again until I got too strong and too smart for them to hold me and I escaped! I became the baddest of the bad space mercenaries and freelance bounty hunters.

Now, I'm the baddest member of the Guardians of the frickin' Galaxy! I go around saving the entire goddamn universe and getting paid of it ... most of the time at least. And don't call me a raccoon ... what's a raccoon anyways?

Anyways, in the 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy film, I'm portrayed via CGI screen capture by Sean Gunn with my voice being provided by Bradley Cooper. Cooper would go on to reprise his role in various films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Background[]

Rocket or Rocket Raccoon as he is more commonly referred as; began life as a minor figure in the Marvel Universe. He was introduced as "Rocky Raccoon", an anthromorphic raccoon with human-level intelligence gifted with animal agility and reflexes. He debuted in Marvel Preview #7, published in the summer of 1976 and was created by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen.

Rocky Raccoon was named in homage to the 1968 Beatles song of the same name and much of his original appearance and elements of the story features aspects inspired by it. He was later retconned to being "Rocket" and that the "Rocky" was just a nickname.

His background was also expanded in a 4-issue limited series and it was revealed that he and his various animal compatriots were all genetically modified with human-level intellect to assist and care for mentally ill patients in a specially isolated colony known as "Halfworld". These patients were being studied as part of a long term alien scientific exploration into insanity when the experiment was abruptly cancelled and the patients (and their animal caretakers) were essentially abandoned.

Over the years, the descendants of the mentally ill patients who had inherited their parents' insanity now known as "Loonies" continued to be cared for by the descendants of the animals. Rocket was given the post of Guardian and was their chief law enforcement officer before he encountered the Incredible Hulk who aided him in defeating a major threat to the safety of the Loonies.

Shortly afterwards, Rocket would embark on a perilous journey which enabled him to retrieve the aliens' detailed log notes which enabled him to cure the Loonies from their mental illnesses and thus ending his responsibilities as their Guardian. Afterwards with no apparent ties left to Halfworld, Rocket left to find more adventures among the stars.

Rocket appeared sporadically over the next few decades, even apparently dying at the conclusion of one storyline. But he abruptly reappeared in 2004 where he was among a stable of space faring Marvel characters who fought in the "Annihilation" crossover miniseries. Rocket was one of the war heroes of this conflict and was recruited by his ex-war buddy, Peter Quill aka "Star-Lord" to form a team of universal peacekeepers that was subsequently dubbed "The Guardians of the Galaxy".

Since then, Rocket has become inextricably linked the group and has even successfully led the group during Quill's absence. He was also responsible for recruiting the tree alien Groot into the organization. The pair have become firm friends and the unlikely duo have since evolved into extremely popular comic book characters and key members of the aforementioned Guardians, often featuring prominently in several comic book series. Their popularity is such that both Rocket and his sidekick Groot have even starring together in several solo comic book series together.

Since his emergence to prominence in the Marvel Comic-verse, Rocket Raccoon has made several guest appearances in several Marvel animated features as a member of the Guardians and the 2014 live action movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the fact that he is such a popular character and key figure in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, originally, Rocket was almost written out of the original film script as the writers felt he was "too cartoonish".
